To New Beginnings...
So this took me forever to write and I rewrote this 4 times. I didn't know whether I wanted to post this, well I kind of actually had to for my English class, but I didn't know if it was good. I tried to get as many opinions from lots of people about my speech and I think it's ready. I, sadly, didn't get picked for giving the speech. I think it would've been awesome and fun but it is what it is. So please enjoy my speech. (Sorry for typos. I modified things for privacy.)
Friends, family, teachers, my name is Maryam Khona and I'm your chief flight attendant for tonight. On behalf of the graduating class of 2018, welcome to Golf Airlines: departure, GMS, destination: high school. So welcome. I have been asked to say that in case of the event of an emergency, like my speech crashing, please know that there are emergency exits on both sides of the building and your seats do indeed act as effective floatation devices. Graduates, prepare for take-off, please. And passengers, fasten your seatbelts, sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight. Well, it seems like we're experiencing some turbulence. Just like there are bumps when you're 35,000 feet in the air, there are also bumps in our lives. In life, there's just always going to be, as I like to call them, peaks and valleys. One day you feel like you're at the peak of the mountain just like getting an A on a test. Or sometimes you feel like you're in the valley when actually the teacher mixed up your grade with someone else and in reality, you failed the test. Even though my time at GMS was short, I feel like I've been here forever. My peers and teachers were so welcoming when I first arrived at GMS since I had just lost my mother due to brain cancer. They made me feel like one, big, happy family. With my time here, we've all shared wonderful memories with each other- from making s'mores by the campfire at camp to all of the crazy, yet quite interesting stories Mrs. Joyner tells us on a daily basis. Don't forget about all of the times we've pulled all-nighters, especially when we needed to study for Mr. Carris' WWII test, or even last week when we were cramming lots of information for finals. I could even continue to talk about how much fun I had on the basketball and cheerleading team or when we went to My Starving Children to help the children that are less fortunate than us. Even though we shared lots of enjoyable moments, we all had our ups and downs at some point. Although, these ups and downs plus the wonderful moments have led us up to this point where we celebrate not only our academics but us, growing into individual, young adults. Not only did these events make us smarter, but they've made us wiser as well. We're here. But what about the future? Soon, it'll the time to depart GMS and fly to a whole new territory. I can't speak for everyone here, but I know for me, the departure will be tough. Though, it will be an epic adventure. But when I'm flying over to high school I'll be thinking about my goals for the future. Think about how this is not an end, but how it's a new beginning! We have the next four years of our lives to grow academically, emotionally, physically, mentally, you get the point here. As a picture from Pinterest once told me, "It's not about the destination we aim for in our lives. Sometimes, it's the journey that got us there that we will remember and cherish the most." You may experience some flight delays or unexpected turbulence along the way, but our journey is far from being over, just like this speech. So thank you to all my teachers, for never giving up on me and making sure I stayed on top of my A game. Thank you to my dad, who is also my best friend, for putting up with my annoying teenage problems. Thank you to Mrs. Featherstone, for being the person I could always run to at school when I was feeling down. Thank you to my GMS family for teaching me valuable lessons and for always being there during my dark times. I will forever cherish my time here at GMS. Okay, everybody, it's time to catch our next flight. Don't worry, this loving, dysfunctional family I like to call the graduating class and the spectacular teachers and staff will forever be apart of our journey and in the end, our destination. Congratulations to the class of 2018 and future *insert my future school mascot*. Thank you!
